What is Navagraha?

According to Hindu mythology, Navagraha is considered to be the Nine Celestial bodies (planets of our solar system) and Gods that are responsible for holding a great significance and effect on human life on Earth. The word Navagraha is derived from Sanskrit in which Nav refers to Nine and Graha refers to the planet.

Navagraha in Hindu culture is directly related to the Astrology and its studies, in which the significance and importance of them are explained and studied in detail by the various Jyotish (Astrologers), which help them to make future predictions regarding human life, this study is known as Jyotish Shastra.

Interestingly, They are believed to be the reasons of a person’s personality, habits, characteristics and fate. Surely, these have a great significance in our life.

Which are the Nine Navagraha’s?

Surya (Sun)

Chandra (Moon)

Mangal (Mars)

Budha (Mercury)

Brihaspati (Jupiter)

Shukra (Venus)

Saturn (Shani)

Rahu

Ketu

Here it is important to note that Rahu and Ketu are 2 imaginary shadow planets.

Surya

Surya is the leader of all the other Navagraha and is the most powerful of all, as all the other celestial bodies of our Solar System revolve around it. Surya is also considered the Sun God. Sunday is the day of the Sun God.

Surya personifies some qualities which are leadership, strength, authority, ego, and vitality of the person.

Chandra

You must know Chandra as our Earth’s natural satellite whereas in Hindu Mythology Chandra is considered to be the Moon God, on which the Hinduism Lunar calendar is followed. Chandra is considered to be one of the most important gods of the Hindu culture which holds a great value.

Monday is the day of Moon-God. Chandra personifies some qualities which are thinking, stability and fertility.

Mangal

Mangal is the third Navagraha, which we know as Mars the Red planet of our solar system. Hindu Mythology believes Mangal as the Hindu God of war, and is thought to have red-colored skin that is depicted by the planet’s color.

Mangal is believed being the reason of highly skilled in hands and handling different types of equipment, anger, and strength.
Tuesday is the day thought to be associated with Mangal, which is also called Magalvaar in Hindi.

Budha

Budha is considered to be the fourth Navagraha, which we know as planet mercury of our solar system. Budha is also known as the Son of Chandra the Moon-God. Wednesday is thought to be the day of Budha, which in Hindi is also known as Budhavaar.

Budha is considered to be the deity of Intelligence, communication, humor, and wit. The planet is believed to control our nervous system.

Guru

Guru, the fifth Navagraha, which we know as the planet Jupiter which is the largest planet in our Solar System. Guru is considered to be the deity of light and master of the Gods, which is denoted by its name ‘’Guru”.

Planet Guru is considered to provide wisdom and wealth. Thursday or ‘Guruwaar’ in hindi, is the day of plant Guru.

Shukra

Shukra, the sixth Navagraha, or Venus in our Solar system is the master of demons as per Hinduism. Friday( Shukravaar) is the day to worship Shukra.

Hinduism believes that planet Shukra brings luxury, better luck, peace of mind, and wealth.

Shani

Shani is our seventh Navagraha, and we know it as the planet Saturn. According to Hinduism Shani is considered to be a diety of Karma (deed), justice, and retribution.

Planet Shani is worshipped by offering him mustard oil for getting fortune and good health on Saturday (Shanivaar). It is one of the most powerful grah and plays a vital role in a person’s life.

Rahu

Rahu, the eighth Navagraha, which is located on the northern side of the moon. It doesn’t have any physical appearance and is considered to be the imaginary point in the sky which is considered a shadow planet.

Rahu is thought to control ego, anger, and mentality. Rahu is believed to provide immense wealth and prosperity. Rahu is considered to be the head part of the Demon.

Ketu

Ketu is the ninth Navagraha, which is located on the southern side of the moon. Ketu is also a shadow planet with no physical existence. Ketu is believed to have a retrograde motion. Ketu means comet in Sanskrit. According to Hindu mythology, Ketu is considered to be the torso of the demon.

Ketu is believed to provide spiritual growth, knowledge, health, and wealth in life.

So, now you know our Navagrahas. Let’s check their collective significance in our life.

Significance Of Navagraha In Our Life

It is so interesting that these planets controls our life. The whole astrology lies on these Navagrahas.

As mentioned above according to Hinduism and Astrology the position of the Navagraha during the person’s birth helps astrologers to predict the future and problems of their life. According to the Hindu Astrology, there are 12 zodiac signs (Rashis), and each of these Rashis is affected by the changing positions of these Navagraha. These changes in the position of Navagraha have different effects on different Zodiac Signs (Rashis) which can be both bad and good.

To counter these bad effects which are also known as Doshas in Hinduism, people follow some rituals and Poojas(prayers), which are performed with the help of pandits/gurus (Hindu religious teachers) which is also known as Navagraha Pooja. Navagraha is believed to hold prestigious value in Hinduism, as in Hinduism it is believed that worshipping them can bring fortunes to people’s life and can remove the negativity from their life.

Hindu Mythology is so vast that a single blog would not be enough to cover Navagrahas. We will try to provide more information in our subsequent posts.

Significance of Chaitra Navratri Festival:

Vasant Navratri is also another name for Chaitra Navratri. It is celebrated on the first day of the Hindu calendar, which is usually in March or April. It is a grand nine-day celebration in Northern India that is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Navratri is celebrated in the Shukla paksha of the Chaitra masa (Hindu calendar month) between March and April. Gudi Padwa is the Maharashtrian name for the first day of Navratri, while Navreh is the Kashmiri name. This Navratri is widely observed in Northern and Western India, and it adds to the charm and divinity of the spring season.

“Chaitra” means the start of a new year. So the New Year starts with nine days of introspection, including prayer, meditation, and chanting.

9 Avatars of Maa Durga

Nine Avatars of Maa Durga

In the Navaratri days, Goddess Durga is worshipped, sung, and invoked in all her nine forms, which represent power, strength, bravery, knowledge, beauty, grace, and auspiciousness.

These Navaratri avatars of Durga Maa are worshipped for nine days.

Day 1: Shailaputri Puja

Pratipada is the first day of Chaitra Navratri. Devotees worship Shailputri, an avatar of Goddess Parvati, on this day. Several worshippers place Kalash in their homes on this day. Her deity wears a half-moon on her brow and wields a trident in one hand and a lotus blossom in the other.

Day 2: Brahmacharini Puja

On the second day of the holy celebration, Goddess Brahmacharini, an avatar of Goddess Paravati, is worshipped. Devi Brahmacharini is known for her true and pure devotion as well as her determination.

Day 3: Chandraghanta Puja

The goddess Chandraghanta is worshipped on the third day of Chaitra Navratri. She rides on a tiger and a half-moon on her forehead shaped like a bell.

Day 4: Kushmanda Puja

On the fourth day, Goddess Kushmanda is worshipped. This Goddess’s Navratri importance is that she bestows good health and strength to her worshipers. She is known as Ashtabhuja Devi because she is depicted with eight hands.

Day 5: Skandamata Puja

Skandamata, the mother of the war God Skanda, is honored on the fifth day of Navratri (Kartikey). She rides a ferocious lion and holds Lord Skanda, a newborn, in her lap. She is also known as the “Goddess of Fire” since she is thought to have been chosen as the commander in chief of the struggle against the demon.

Day 6: Katyayani Puja

Katyayani, also known as Mahishasuramardini, is Maa Durga’s sixth form. Katyayani was born to destroy Mahishasura. Anger, revenge, and eventual victory against evils are among her defining characteristics.

Day 7: Kalaratri Puja

Goddess Kalaratri, who is honored on the seventh day of Navratri is said to be Goddess Durga’s fiercest and most violent appearance.

Day 8: Mahagauri Puja

Mahagauri is Goddess Durga’s eighth form and is regarded as the most graceful of the navaforms. Her beauty shines with the purity of a pearl. Mahagauri has four-armed. She holds a trident in her lower right hand and her right hand in the position of alleviating suffering. Her top left arm is holding a tambourine, while her lower left arm is giving blessings.

Lohri & Makar Sankranti 2021: Lohri & Makar Sankranti are the two main festivals to be celebrated every year in the moth of January. Here, we are trying to brief you about these two festivals.

Lohri 2021:

Lohri, a community festival of joy, warmth, and gratitude, Lohri is overwhelmingly celebrated in Punjab and its neighboring states as Haryana and Delhi. This year Lohri is on January 13, around the Uttarayan and Makar Sankranti. Celebrated with extraordinary excitement, Lohri represents the maturing of crops and the beginning of the harvest season. Lohri is about fellowship, extraordinary food and singing, and moving around a huge bone fire. The celebration draws out Punjab’s rich customs of agriculture, colors, and the power of sharing. Lohri is in this way a fine illustration of a network celebration. Here’s about Lohri’s date, time, customs, and festivities.

Date, Time, and Significance

Date: 13th-January-2021

Time: 9:59 PM (According to Orlando, Florida),

Note: At Maa Durga Sri Sai Baba temple, we are also celebrating Lohri festival. Please refer our Calendar for date and timings.

Significance:

Lohri is the main festival of Punjab. It rotates around offering thanks to Agni (fire) and the Sun god for plentiful yields. In Punjab, the principal crop is wheat, which is planted after the rainy season in October and harvested in March or April. Around Lohri and Makar Sankranti, the wheat begins aging offering farmers a great expectation of massive yield. The celebration brings extraordinary social balances as it brings individuals – both rich and poor people – together. The Makki ki roti and Sarson ka saag are cooked in all families and shared.

How Lohri is Celebrated:

Huge bone fires are main to Lohri. The festival rotates around it, adding warmth and cheer to the winter night.

In the farm fields, farmers light enormous huge fires and residents accumulate around it at night wearing new bright colorful garments.

Lohri is a festival of life and individuals love to sing and move around the fire.

5 main prasad to offer to Agni are: till or Sesame or sweets made from it like gajjak, peanuts, Jaggery, popcorn, and puffed rice.

There are some common Lohri songs and fables that everyone sings together and share.

People fly kites on Lohri with Happy Lohri messages.

A legacy of Punjab, people do the Bhangra, Jhoomer, Giddha, and Kikli – a part of this famous festival of joy, colors, and energy.

Makar Sankranti 2021:

Makar Sankranti is celebrated on a fixed date that is 14 January every year. It marks the end of the Winter season and the start of the harvest season.

It is committed to Lord Sun. On this promising day, the sun enters the zodiac indication of Capricorn or Makar which denotes the finish of winter months and the beginning of longer warm days. This is the start of the long stretch of Magh. To reward for the differentiation that occurs because of the transformation around the sun, at regular intervals the day of Sankranti is conceded by one day. From the day of Makar Sankranti, the sun starts it’s toward the north excursion or Uttarayan venture. Hence, this celebration is otherwise called Uttarayan.

Time, Date & Significance:

Date:14-January-2021

Makara Sankranti Punya Kala – 07:19 AM to 05:50 PM

Duration – 10 Hours 31 Mins

Makara Sankranti Maha Punya Kala – 07:19 AM to 09:04 AM

Duration – 01 Hour 45 Mins

Significance and traditions:

Makar Sankranti is the date from which the Northward development of the sun starts. The time frame from Karka Sankranti to Makar Sankranti is known as the Dakshinayan.

Uttarayan is generally known to be a time of fresh start.

Uttarayaṇ is derived from two Sanskrit words ‘Uttara’ or north and ‘Ayana’ or development, showing a toward the north development of the Sun

In Mahabharata, Bheeshma Pitamaha chosen the day of Uttarayan to die. Bheeshma had an extraordinary will of Ichha Mrityu or demise as indicated by his will and he looked out for his passing bed of bolts until Uttarayan

As per the sacred texts, Dakshinayan represents the evening of god or the indication of cynicism, and Uttarayan is considered as an image of the day of God or an indication of energy. Since on this day sun begins its excursion towards the north along these lines, individuals take a blessed dip in Ganga, Godavari, Krishna, Yamuna River at heavenly places. Regularly the sun influences all the zodiac signs, yet it is said that the passage of the sun in the zodiac indication of Cancer and Capricorn strictly is exceptionally productive.

Before Makar Sankranti, the sun is in the Southern Hemisphere. Thus, in India, in winter evenings are longer and days are more modest. Be that as it may, with the Makar Sankranti, the sun begins its excursion towards Northern Hemisphere thus, days will be longer and evenings more modest.

On the event of Makar Sankranti, individuals offer their thanks towards the sun God in different structures. Any commendable deeds or gift during this period sets up more productive.

This festival is the time to celebrate by sharing. In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, it is mainly known as ‘Khichdi’. People used to donate things like blankets, sweaters, dal-rice, etc.

In Tamilnadu and most part of South India, It is known as Pongal.

In Bengal, people donate til after taking bath in the holy river on the day of Makar Sankrant. A huge fair is organized every year in Gangasagar.

In Gujarat, the kite festival is organized on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

Om Sai Namo Namah.

Shri Sai Namo Namah.

Jai-Jai Sai Namo Namah,

Sadguru Sai Namo Namah.

Maa Durga Sai Baba Temple family wishes everyone a prosperous and healthy year 2021.

What is the most best than seeking Sri Sai Baba’s blessings on the new year’s day one? Let us try to explore Sai’s blessings.

Sai Baba’s Life in Brief:

Sri Sai Baba, known as Sai Baba of Shirdi, (Since 1838— October 15, 1918), to Hindu and Muslim fans all through India and in diaspora networks as distant as the United States and the Caribbean. The name Sai Baba comes from ‘sai’, a Persian word utilized by Muslims to mean a sacred individual, and baba, Hindi for father.

Sai Baba’s initial years are a mystery. Most records notice his introduction to the world as a Hindu Brahman and his adoption by a Sufi fakir. However, it is believed that he had a Hindu Guru later. Sai Baba came to Shirdi, in the western Indian territory of Maharashtra, around 1858, and stayed there till his last breath in 1918.

Dwarka Mai:

Sai Baba stayed in a Mosque which he named ‘Dwarka Mai’. Sai baba has huge disciples of both Hindu and Muslim. He believed that there is only one God. Among his teachings, “Sabka Malik Ek”; says it all.

Dwarka Mai, in Shirdi, is a pilgrimage for his followers. He believed that having faith in God will resolve all problems, but patience is the key.

He had a great knowledge of the Puranas, the Bhagavadgita, and different parts of Hindu ideas.

He is believed to be an incarnation of God as many times his supernatural powers showed up in the form of a miracle.

Daily approximately 25,000 followers visit his holy ‘DwarkaMai’ in Shirdi. Where a huge Sai Baba Temple is made. On religious occasions or festivals, this number increases to 1.5 lacs to 2 lacs daily.

Sai Baba 11 Vachans : His precious preachings

||Sabka Malik Ek||

||Shraddha Saburi|

Sai Baba of Shirdi has given 11 Vachans or assurances to his devotees.

1.Whoever steps on the soil of Shirdi will cease to suffer.

जो शिरडी में आएगा, आपद दूर भगाएगा

2.Who so ever climbs the steps of my Samadhi, will lose all his sorrows.

चढ़े समाधी की सीढी पर, पैर तले दुःख

की पीढ़ी कर

3.Even as I shed this body, I will always be there for the devotee.

त्याग शरीर चला जाऊंगा, भक्त हेतु

दौडा आऊंगा

4.My Samadhi will answer your prayers, have faith in me.

मन में रखना द्रढ विश्वास, करे

समाधी पूरी आस

5.I will always be immortal for you.

मुझे सदा ही जीवत जानो, अनुभव

करो सत्य पहचानो

6.Those who surrender to me,will evolve and progress.

मेरी शरण आ खाली जाए, हो कोई

तो मुझे बताए

7.Those who see me with love, so also will I see them

जैसा भाव रहे जिस जन का, वैसा रूप हुआ

मेरे मनका

8.I will carry your burden, this is my promise to you.

भार तुम्हारा मुझ पर होगा, वचन न

मेरा झूठा होगा

9. Those who seek my help, I will help them.

आ सहायता लो भरपूर,

जो माँगा वो नही है दूर

10.Whoever becomes one with me, I will forever be indebted to him.

मुझ में लीन वचन मन काया, उसका ऋण

न कभी चुकाया

11.Whoever takes my name will receive my grace.

धन्य-धन्य व भक्त अनन्य, मेरी शरण तज जिसे न अन्य

Dwarkamai In Maa Durga Sri Sai Baba Temple , Orlando

Being a responsible temple, we had to fulfill the needs of those who are living in Florida, USA. Keeping in mind, We have a Holy Dwarkamai inside the temple premises and a huge Sai Darbar, where all his devotees take part in ‘Sai Sandhya’ and other events.
