Lohri 2021:
Lohri, a community festival of joy, warmth, and gratitude, Lohri is overwhelmingly celebrated in Punjab and its neighboring states as Haryana and Delhi. This year Lohri is on January 13, around the Uttarayan and Makar Sankranti. Celebrated with extraordinary excitement, Lohri represents the maturing of crops and the beginning of the harvest season. Lohri is about fellowship, extraordinary food and singing, and moving around a huge bone fire. The celebration draws out Punjab’s rich customs of agriculture, colors, and the power of sharing. Significance:
Lohri is the main festival of Punjab. It rotates around offering thanks to Agni (fire) and the Sun god for plentiful yields. In Punjab, the principal crop is wheat, which is planted after the rainy season in October and harvested in March or April. Around Lohri and Makar Sankranti, the wheat begins aging offering farmers a great expectation of massive yield. The celebration brings extraordinary social balances as it brings individuals – both rich and poor people – together. The Makki ki roti and Sarson ka saag are cooked in all families and shared.
How Lohri is Celebrated:
- Huge bone fires are main to Lohri. The festival rotates around it, adding warmth and cheer to the winter night.
- In the farm fields, farmers light enormous huge fires and residents accumulate around it at night wearing new bright colorful garments.
- Lohri is a festival of life and individuals love to sing and move around the fire.
- 5 main prasad to offer to Agni are: till or Sesame or sweets made from it like gajjak, peanuts, Jaggery, popcorn, and puffed rice.
- There are some common Lohri songs and fables that everyone sings together and share.
- People fly kites on Lohri with Happy Lohri messages.
- A legacy of Punjab, people do the Bhangra, Jhoomer, Giddha, and Kikli – a part of this famous festival of joy, colors, and energy.
Makar Sankranti 2021:
Makar Sankranti is celebrated on a fixed date that is 14 January every year. It marks the end of the Winter season and the start of the harvest season.
It is committed to Lord Sun. On this promising day, the sun enters the zodiac indication of Capricorn or Makar which denotes the finish of winter months and the beginning of longer warm days. This is the start of the long stretch of Magh. To reward for the differentiation that occurs because of the transformation around the sun, at regular intervals the day of Sankranti is conceded by one day. From the day of Makar Sankranti, the sun starts it’s toward the north excursion or Uttarayan venture. Hence, this celebration is otherwise called Uttarayan.

Significance and traditions:
- Makar Sankranti is the date from which the Northward development of the sun starts. The time frame from Karka Sankranti to Makar Sankranti is known as the Dakshinayan.
- Uttarayan is generally known to be a time of fresh start.
- Uttarayaṇ is derived from two Sanskrit words ‘Uttara’ or north and ‘Ayana’ or development, showing a toward the north development of the Sun
- In Mahabharata, Bheeshma Pitamaha chosen the day of Uttarayan to die. Bheeshma had an extraordinary will of Ichha Mrityu or demise as indicated by his will and he looked out for his passing bed of bolts until Uttarayan
- As per the sacred texts, Dakshinayan represents the evening of god or the indication of cynicism, and Uttarayan is considered as an image of the day of God or an indication of energy. Since on this day sun begins its excursion towards the north along these lines, individuals take a blessed dip in Ganga, Godavari, Krishna, Yamuna River at heavenly places. Regularly the sun influences all the zodiac signs, yet it is said that the passage of the sun in the zodiac indication of Cancer and Capricorn strictly is exceptionally productive.

- In Bengal, people donate til after taking bath in the holy river on the day of Makar Sankrant. A huge fair is organized every year in Gangasagar.
- In Gujarat, the kite festival is organized on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.
